The Magic of the Universe

Personal Project

Narrative:

I crafted a captivating 2D abstract animation inspired by a quote from one of my all-time favorite books, Stardust by Neil Gaiman. It's a visual journey that brings the magic and wonder of the story to life.

Goal:

The quote I picked 'The universe is full of magic, and you only have to look around to find it.' I wanted to explore black and white animation and find beautiful ways to represent the quote.

Process:

I really enjoyed this project as it was very experimental. By exploring the quote, it helped me develop my process more by visually experimenting with the important parts of the words in the quote I picked.

Storyboard:

Once I highlighted the key words, I started to look at my references for how I would lay out the animation. Creating the storyboard helped me get a clear idea of the approach I wanted to take to animate.

Illustrator:

I wanted to create the base in Illustrator to achieve sharp and clean lines. With this workflow, I aimed to explore importing the elements from Illustrator to After Effects, ensuring a smooth animation process.

Photoshop:

I used the elements in Illustrator as the base, then imported the parts into Photoshop to create the visual look I wanted, based on my references and the color palette I chose. Creating different gradients and shades of grey was easy to apply to the parts from Illustrator.

After Effects:

Once I finished completing the texturing in Photoshop and the base elements in Illustrator, I imported both into After Effects to start the animation process. I recreated some of the elements, such as the background, noise, and some of the circles, to allow me to animate the shapes and change them with shape layers.

Audition:

From the dyslexia animation, I had some experience with cutting the audio. With the visuals completely finished, I had the perfect track for the animation and cut the clip accordingly to the length of the animation.
